Chinook salmon are magnificent creatures, whether fresh from the sea or digging in gravels hundreds of miles - months from the sea As a fisheries biologist for some four decades, I focused much of my angling and professional passion on Chinook salmon. Eventually, I discovered the challenges and rewards of fly fishing for kings in the estuaries. It's fair to say that my life these days is framed around the seasons of the Chinook runs on the Oregon coast. A Chinook fishery conducted by fly rod anglers in coastal rivers of North America is documented by a series of articles scattered about in fishing magazines; by Russell Chatham in his book "The Angler's Coast;" and the movie 'Rivers of A Lost Coast' by Justin coupe and Palmer Taylor. I composed this book as a journal to document the favorite Chinook flies tied by 24 Oregon salmon anglers. I hope you enjoy these images and each angler's commentary. [Jay Nicholas, September 2015] Justin Coupe says "I really enjoyed (this) book - it brought me back to the culture of the salmon fly fisher that I embraced during the making of the movie (Rivers of A Lost Coast). The foreword is excellent and Rob Russell did a fantastic job laying the scene and parameters of the book. Great work Jay, glad someone captured the history . . . . . because no one else is." Note I always recommend that each person who purchases these soft cover books take them down to a business like OFFICEMAX or FEDEX to get them spiral bound. The books will wear better and it is nice to be able to lay the book flat open on fly bench too. Thanks very much for your support.

A "must have" book for newbies to the sport of fly casting for Chinook Salmon. On second thought, a "must have" for Salmon fly anglers at any level! The book contains numerous detailed photos of go-to flies used here in Oregon and around the Pacific Northwest tied by a group of experts in this often overlooked, very secretive and (usually) frustrating fishery. These are the guys that slide up next to you, drop anchor and within a few casts you hear their reels screaming and see the rods bent over double. The format of the book is awesome. On one page you're given a virtual peek at each tiers working fly box. On the next page you get all the specifications and details. Variations of the patterns, how they came about, tweaks, tying tips, presentation methods, etc. It's akin to a 15 minute "speed-dating" session with each of them! But instead of walking away with their phone number, you're provided with years of accumulated knowledge about fly fishing for salmon.
Well done Mr. Nicholas.

Oregon Chinook Flies Real Fishing Flies Tied by 24 Salmon Anglers Jay W Nicholas Rob Russell 9781515302773 Books Reviews
This book should be in your home library, it gives you valuable info as well as some great background on the people that created the patterns in the book.
All of these flies are beautifully presented and I was so stoked to find inspiration here, with in the cover of this book. Often times salmon focus so hard on certain patterns and this book really helped me as an angler adjust my scope of flies and encouraged me to branch out.
If you want to get into the minds of some of the great salmon fishermen of the Oregon coast and what patterns work this book is for you.
